Jennifer Bailey - New Girls

Saturday 17 - Sunday 18 September 2011

New Girls was a small presentation of new work by Jennifer Bailey, exhibited alongside pre-existing objects and furniture in the living room of 38b Peckham Rye.

For New Girls, Bailey showed a series of glazed ceramics and photographic works. Printed on thin polyester, lending them a tactile, almost painterly quality, the photographs featured a peer artist of Bailey’s posing in her studio. The ceramics, with their hand-built shape, hinted slightly at the female form suggestive of a loose formal relationship with the figure in the photographs. The works were all of a domestic scale, but unwieldy; the ceramics recalling decorative objets d'art and the photographs the kind of durable poster that might be found on a merchandising stand at a pop concert.

Works on show:

Danielle in the Studio II, 2010, Digitial photograph on polyester

New Girls, 2011, Glazed ceramics

Other:

Self-adheshive vinyl lettering

Apartamento magazine #7

Aluminium compact disc tower

Posters Fo' Sho at Five Years, London

21 May - 5 June 2011

From pasted up street propaganda to modern billboard advertising, from lo-fi photocopies to screen-printed editions, some of the more creative visions come from the world of the poster, a tool to inform, manipulate, educate, inform and entice.

Posters Fo’ Sho’ explored the poster as both art-form and advert. At the invitation of Five Years members Mike Murphy & Kelly O'Connor, 38b asked artists, designers and makers to create a poster which served to both form the show's body of work as well as the tool with which to promote it.

The posters had to contain the title, location and dates of the exhibition, but participating artists were invited to do or say what they wished with all other creative content and interpretation...Fo’ Sho’

Minor Domestic Interventions

Minor Domestic Interventions

Thursday 24 February - Sunday 6 March 2011

An exhibition of interruptions and interventions by Edward Cotterill, Noel Hensey and Leo Koivistoinen

It's not strange to have visitors looking at art in your flat, we put it there for others to see/to be in awe of, to highlight our particular tastes and to allow others to understand us without the need to explain ourselves. However, if the boundaries between the art and our more banal belongings are made unclear then how are our visitors able to construct any sense of meaning from what they are seeing?

The exhibition Minor Domestic Interventions endeavored to draw more focus to the place itself, the essence of which is unmistakably domestic, a place where you do not only see white walls or feel the coldness of an empty warehouse but a place where someone has accumulated objects in their nest, perhaps quite similar to your own.

By revising our relationship to our immediate environment, such as the relationship a displaced showerhead has to religious belief, a doorbell’s connotation in times of global networking or simply moving an object from one part of a house to another, all can have far reaching implications. What this art does in this case is to challenge the ‘normal’ domestic order of flat 38b Peckham Rye.

Bless this house.

A Very Special Episode

Thursday 30 September 2010

An evening of performative, visual and sonic artworks by Patrick Coyle & Rita Evans

A Very Special Episode brought together artists Patrick Coyle and Rita Evans for a very special, one-off re-imagining of two of their works, allowing for unexpected elements of overlap and slippage.

Patrick Coyle – Alphabetes
Alphabetes is a performance in which the artist attempts to explain a selection of both intentional and accidental mis-readings. This ramble through twenty-six images and objects is delivered from memory, while the audience is provided with a script.

Rita Evans – Disembodied Sound & Light Orchestra 2010
The Disembodied Sound and Light Orchestra is a sculptural performance that is different every time it plays. DS&LO is an installation that combines sculptural structures, sound, a human audience and the immediate acoustic environment. This is recorded by a silent (but ever present) colour ‘measure’ or ‘living score’.
